I will share with you how to make this cute garland
Besides this cloth star garland I have other types of star garland like: Wooden stars with beads, cardboard, and with popsicle sticks. You can check out those blogs. You can have fun making them with your family.
This one I’m making is for a patriotic celebration but you can easily alter this by using different fabric choices.
You can make one for Christmas with just using the white and red material as I have here.
Here are the supplies you will need to make this cloth star garland
- Cloth/material – different colors/patterns
- Star stencil – Use thick paper (card stock) and a pencil to make it
- Needle and thread
- Jute cord
- Stuffing/filling
- Floral wire – optional
- Glue gun and glue sticks – optional
- Scissors
- Straight pins or safety pins
How To Make Cloth Star Garland
- Get a piece of thick paper – like card stock and draw/trace two stars using a star cookie cutter or something else to form 2 different sized stars. 1 large and 1 small star template.
- Next cut out the star templates and set aside.
- Now fold your material in half so that when you cut out your stars you will have the two pieces needed.
- Use the paper star templates to trace on the material. Do this on your 3 different materials all folded in half.
- Trace at least 8 small stars and 7 larger stars total. That is 2 large stars and 3 small stars in each color.
6. Pin each star in the middle with a straight pin or safety pin. Pin through both layers of material.
7. Cut out all your stars.
8. Sew (hand stitch or sewing machine) around most of the star leaving a good gap that is not sewn up.
This will give you an opening to insert the stuffing/filling.
9. Push in small amounts of filling using your fingers or pencil to push it into the star tips.
10. When the stars are filled you will now finish sewing the star up.
11. Make a small loop of thread at the tip of the star for hanging. Or poke in floral wire at the top twisting to close.
12. Cut your jute or string to the desired length.
13. Strand on your stars or hot glue if going that route. I like to alternate the colors and sizes of the stars on the jute.
14. Make a loop at both ends of your jute for hanging.
And now you can hang your garland and enjoy decorating your house.
These stars are also fun to be used as decoration off of the garland.
Additionally they can even be a cat toy since my cat ran off with one and enjoyed playing with it.
