I have some great diy decorations for 4th of July for you. Are you planning a 4th of July celebration? Or just want to decorate your house for the holiday?
I will share with you some great diy decorations to make and some decoration ideas with items you have in your home.
Most of these decoration ideas you could also use for any patriotic holiday such as Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day.
As a family it can be really fun to make decorations together. Additionally kids can be so proud of what they make and feel special displaying it in their home. You can really share some good quality time with them while making your house festive.
It’s Easy to make decorations with items around your house. It can be pretty cheap if using items that you would be recycling. Especially by finding items you already have by just adding in a flag or something red, white, or blue.
What decorations are used on the 4th of July? Anything red, white, and blue which are the colors of the American flag. Stars and stripes like on the American flag are used as symbols to decorate with. Fireworks are usually blown up for part of the festivities on 4th of July. So you can use diy fireworks to display as decorations. And sparklers in a container looks cute and can store them till they are used. American flags are used for decorations also, so put those in your bottles or hang them up. Use your imagination and use any of those items or others you can think of maybe even rockets.
Here are some easy items to upcycle and turn into your fabulous diy decorations for 4th of July:
Wine bottles, beer bottles, sports drink plastic bottles, tin cans, cardboard, glass jars, empty salt container, paper tubes and I’m sure many other items.
How can you upcycle your items into 4th of July decorations?
There are so many different ways to make your items festive for your patriotic celebration.
- You can paint them by using regular paint or spray paint.
- Decorate it by using rub on stickers, regular stickers or rhinestone stickers.
- Glue items on it like sequins, glitter, and other items.
- Wrap them with red, white, or blue duct tape. Curling ribbon, yarn, jute, straws, popsicle sticks, cloth or wrapping paper are great to decorate with also.
- Decoupage them with napkins.
Here are some ways to use your reusable items to make diy decorations for 4th of July
- Glass bottles or jars
- These turn out really pretty with spray paint. Surprisingly you can get different textures and looks with it. Spray it and let it drip and run so the colors can merge together. And then use as a vase or tall candle holder.
- Additionally clear glass jars can be used to put red, white, or blue gum balls in to serve as a decoration and treat for all. Same goes with chocolate candies, and any other treat or item of those colors. Using red, white, and blue sand, bath salt or stones can be cute for display.
- Sports drink plastic bottle or other plastic containers
- Paint these and use as a vase or flag holder. Kids can easily paint these with paint and a paint brush. To weigh the plastic bottle down put in red, white, or blue beads or rocks along with a flag.
- Tin Can
- You can paint these and poke holes through some of them. Kids can easily paint these and then you can drill holes through the can. It can look really cute if you make holes in the can forming a star. Then put a candle or battery operated votive/candle in it. These can be used inside or outside on a table.
- Tin cans are really cute with jute around them giving a rustic look. You can use them to put plastic ware in them for a party. Use red, white, and blue straws cut to the length of the tin can and hot glue it down. Or you can use popsicle sticks that you color and glue to the tin can. Kids can use markers, crayons, pencil colors or paint to color the sticks. Great for them to work on their fine motor skills. Hot glue works the best; however, if your kids are making them you may want to use regular glue.
- Wooden clothes pins
- Paint the close pins red, white and blue. Afterwards use a permanent marker to write “forks”, “spoons” and etc… on them. Not to mention this makes a cute label for food items also. The clothes pins could be used for clipping things up like some hanging stars or a banner too. Besides using them to clip things up you can use them to create a decoration with. Like a wreath of colored clothespins or a flag made up of them.
- Cardboard
- Cardboard can be used in many ways. You can easily cut cardboard into stars which you or your kids can color or paint. They can be used for decorations sitting on the table or make holes and hang them. Additionally A cardboard star garland would be fun for kids to make.
- Empty Salt Container
- You can make this look like a firework decoration. First take off the label and then paint the container. Second add decorations. Third use a pipe cleaner as the fuse that you can put through the hole in the top.
- Big plastic protein powder container
- These big bins are easy to turn into a cute functional decoration. You can wrap colored duct tape around it. Use a thin cute table covering that you can cut and cover it. Furthermore glue on big stickers or cut out stars from a thin table cloth and glue on.
- Afterwards these can be used to store or display sparklers or other fireworks.
- Wrapping paper tube- toilet paper tube, paper towel tube or any other paper tube
- These can turn into really cute firework and rocket party favors. Check out my blog on how to make those cute party favors. This can be a fun diy decorations for 4th of July project with your kids. Additionally your kids will have fun making these cute fireworks or rocket party favors. Surprisingly these are pretty simple to make and of course your kids will like the yummy treats inside. Not to mention you could put in fun toys or small simple pop fireworks the kids can do with their parents if not wanting to put in treats.
Nevertheless if you don’t want to do a lot of work making items then there are some simple ways that you can decorate and be festive.
These are some simple ways of adding a touch of festiveness for your patriotic celebration
- Solid white, blue or red vase – you can use to put a flower or flag in it for decoration.
- Any item that looks cute with a pop of red, white or blue.
- A solid red, white or blue pitcher. Add some red or white roses.
- Wreath made of natural items that you can put red, white, or blue flowers on it.
- Any item made of burlap, jute or that rustic brown or khaki color looks great with a pop of red, white or blue.
- A clear container with red, white or blue items in it. These items can be candy, rocks, glass stones, or any other red, white or blue items.
- Decorate a table with with using red, white or blue material making a table runner. And then add on your vase or other decoration.
- Use a napkin like in the picture above or a plate to help decorate.
Hopefully with all those ideas on how to make some decorations with reusable items and items you already have around the house you should be able to decorate without spending much money if any at all.

When do you start decorating for 4th of July?
I usually start decorating for 4th of July in early to mid June. However, you could put up your patriotic decorations in May for Memorial Day and keep them up till after the 4th of July.
If you want you can leave up your patriotic decorations throughout the rest of July and more of the summer. However if you want to replace them with fun summer decor then do that.
